I must be insane.

I went to lunch with a friend of mine at a new "scottish pub", aka sports bar with scantily clad waitresses wearing plaid bikini tops and verrrrry short kilts that I HOPE something was under. Nevermind that it's the MEN who are supposed to wear kilts, but I digress.

About the only thing they had on the menu that you might possibly find in Scotland were the fish and chips, and the shepherd's pie. I'm picky about my fish, and while the shepherd's pie sounded tasty, I went with the shrimp basket and "garlic fries". The waitress even described, albeit not accurately, the garlic fries. The "tossed lightly with a dash of garlic butter" was more accurately "steeped and served floating in" garlic butter. I did stop eating them when I realized I needed a spoon to get the bottom layer of fries out of the pool of butter, but not a moment before.

I was only paying attention to the fact that I love garlic and the top, not so soaked layer, tasted wonderfully. It was not until I was wondering why I felt so lousy later that I realized what I had just eaten. Butter is good. Fried foods, depending upon what it's fried in and eaten in moderation once in a while is not that bad. Fried food steeped in butter, on the other hand, IS INSANE. WTF was I thinking???

I don't know what you were thinking, but the idea of eating that much grease makes me think of Rolaids.  I just can't eat french fries and the like these days without paying for it in the end.  I accept that payment for onion rings, but fries just aren't enough of an inducement.

And maybe it's just me, but I thought there was nothing worn under a kilt...

I don't think there is either.

I hear you, Jean! I've ordered things like that before. They are delicious for the short amount of time you eat them, but you make up for it later. Of course, if you're like me, you never learn and do the same thing next time.
