RE: Total Bull

I was catching up on some bull riding events I had recorded on my DVR a couple of days ago.  I watched three CBR events, and it struck me just how rank the bulls are on this circuit even in the long go.

The ones that really impressed me were Cochise, naturally, but also Twigs n Berries, Shakedown, Hasta Luego and Itch & Scratch.  These are some big time buckers.  There is so much focus on the PBR, and I don't think the CBR gets enough attention, especially the animals.

If you get the chance, you should watch the CBR on RFD.  Tuff Hedeman and Jeff Medders do a good job announcing too, not as colorful as Donny Gay but they know the bulls.

There's a lot of riders from Xtreme bulls too, and a few from the PBR like Clayton Williams and Reese Cates.

I always forget that the CBR appears on RFD.  I think we've seen it once or twice, but not with any kind of regularity.  Is it more current that the PRCA stuff one sometimes sees on ESPN Classic?  I like watching the PRCA events, but it would be nice if they were a little more recent than 34 BC, when Gluteus Maximus rode Caesar's Heartburn for LXVII points...

Every time I check RFD it's either a guy with a prodigious moustache cooking things in a Dutch oven, or someone making a house out of kudzu.

The CBR events I've watched are all from 2008.  I just set my DVR to record them.

There's a new Xtreme Bulls show on Sat., 11/9, at 3:30 from Indy on ESPN.  It's only 1 hr. so I bet it's just the long go.  I hate it when they do that.  Hopefully it's the short go because I don't see any more Xtreme Bulls scheduled in the next couple of weeks.

I clearly need to pay more attention to ESPN.  I hardly ever think to check its schedule because it always seems to be the World Series of Poker, and if there's anything I find less engaging than watching a bunch of guys play cards, I can't imagine what it would be.

I'm also on the verge of complaining to ESPN Classic now that they've replaced two-year-old PRCA Xtreme Bulls events with fifteen-year-old rodeo events.  I like rodeo well enough, I guess, though I still suspect there's a gimmick to team roping that I'm not hip to yet, but I'd really rather just watch the bull riding.

I didn't know these existed until a minute ago, and I thought about y'all.  These are miniature bucking bulls that average around 4' at the shoulders.

http://www.mbbba.com/

They are used for little kids who want to learn to ride bulls.  Check out some pictures of them here:

ohmygosh I have to go check those out!!!!!!!!! Wonder where I'd put one of those??!!

I've wondered if mini horses can be trained to buck.  There could be some young future saddle bronc and bareback bronc riders out there that want something more substantial than sheep!

My god did you see the sample video on the mbbba website??? Holy Moly that little bull BUCKED!

Okay. I had to show Kap the video on the mbbba website. We cracked up! That little bull bucked as well as the big dudes do.

THEN I was hooked. Spent about 20 minutes on YouTube looking at more miniature bucking bull action LOL.

I recently joined The Breeders Connection message board that Shannon and Cody Thrasher belong to.  And, Shannon, i agree with you on the Fun Board there.  All it is is right wing political talk.  The board for breeders' business is very informative.
That's where I learned about miniature bucking bulls.  I was on there today, and they were talking about Valdiron.  Remember last night when the announcers were talking about how he was going to get fined for staying in the chute too long?  I'm not saying Valdiron did this, but they said a lot of the times a rider will mess with a bull, get him mad or tired out.  Sometimes they'll "soak" the bull meaning they'll pull the rope too tight for awhile which lessens the oxygen intake causing the bull to panic, and if it's a young bull it may screw him up forever.  That is why a rider gets fined for up to $15,000 for staying in the chute too long. They also said that Valdiron has been fined for this many times and that's why he rarely gets 90+ rides.  Whether that's true or not, I have no idea.

I realize this information is coming from breeders/contractors who have an incentive in keeping the bulls safe, so it may not happen as often as they say.  Just thought I'd pass this along.

I was going to mention that, too, Jaye. If it's true, then I think they should fine him. But, what really bothers me is that many of the stock contractors (and it's not in that thread, but I've seen it in the past) turn it into a "Brazilian" thing--especially in regards to Brazilian ropes. A few of them have stated that they refuse to have Brazilian ropes used on their bulls.

I'm sure if they really cared to pay more attention, they'd notice not only a few American riders pull a rope too hard, but there are American riders who use Brazilian ropes, too.

I agree with you 100%, Shannon.  I guess there are some out there who want to tire a bull out to make it easier to ride him.  However, if it messes with the bull, I am totally against it.  Also, it gives the zealot animal rights activists something more to bitch about.

I've just got to post a link to this thread on The Breeders Connection board.  This bull is a grandson of Bodacious and although he's still young, there are two pictures showing him buck.  I swear he is almost doing a handstand.  I've never seen a bull buck with this much drop.  It's amazing.

HOLY MOLY! Those are two different bulls he's got that buck like that. The bull in the top picture is either a muley or has short close horns. The second picture is his other bull. My god. Hope we see those two one day!

My god.

Shannon, I wouldn't worry too much. Those bulls are still just basically calves and thus, aren't lifting what will be their mature body weight. They also don't have the extra 125-180 lb riders weighing them down.  The extra weight will force that kick down some.

White Magic came pretty close to that kick height at the beginning of the year but lost it with illness and weight gain. I noticed he did better last weekend, and looked like he'd lost a bit of weight too.

Age and weight do us all in LOL.

Little Yellow Jacket

I am so excited!  You're not going to believe this!  Little Yellow Jacket is bringing brought down to Tom Teague's ranch in Winston-Salem, NC for breeding.  I emailed him, and Steve Teague wrote me back.  I asked if I could come visit the ranch, see the bulls and take a few photographs.  He said it wouldn't be a problem and that LYJ should arrive in a couple of weeks.  So looks like I may be able to see my favorite bull in person!  I'll keep y'all updated.

WOW! You MUST post pictures when you get back! I want one of you and Teague as well as you and Little Yellow Jacket for my blog, so you have to take someone with you to help operate the camera.

I'm VERY excited for you and wish I could be there too! About the best I can do around here is get a picture of a son of Western Wishes lol.

oh oh oh and totally off topic, but you guys really need to see the photo I posted in the Horses section of the "matched pair".  Jaye, I think being a dog lover, you'll especially enjoy it, but I think it will be pretty amazing (not to mention terminally cute) for everyone.

Jean, I saw that picture and it's adorable!!!  That's not your animals, is it?  I didn't think you had a Great Dane.  Maybe you should get one if you don't.  You know that'd be the talk of the town riding around with dogs and miniature horses pulling you.

I have to tell you.  I am so excited about going to Tom Teague's ranch that I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight.  It will be pretty hard to get someone to go with me if it's during the week when I go since everyone works, and no one I know here is a bull riding fan.  I've already told my boss I'll be off one day in a couple of weeks.  Other people I have told at work look at me like I'm a crazy woman.  It's all up to the Teagues as to when I'll go, of course.  They only need to give me the date and time, and I'll be there.  Hopefully, I'll be able to see LYJ up close, but I doubt they'll let me hug his neck like I want to do.  I'm trying to find out what other bulls will be there, but I'm not going to email Teague about it because I don't want to bug them.  I'm hoping someone on the Breeder's Connection board will know.

I saw a deer in the backyard this morning.  That was pretty cool.  Only the second time I've seen one around here although I know they're everywhere.  What with it being mating season, they seem to be coming out into the open more.  This one was a buck.  Molly, my dog, wanted to charge it.  Evidentally she thinks she's 100 lbs, not 7 lbs.

No, those are not mine. They belong to a friend of one of my neighbors. I don't have a great dane, my smallish mutts are enough to clean up after. I also don't have an appaloosa mini yet. I'd love to have one, but no time soon lol. I have enough of what I have.  Fortunately, there are no buckskin colored dog breeds about 28 inches tall at the shoulder (to my knowledge) or I might have to have one of those to match our tiniest mini!

I'm so excited about your visit to Teagues that I might not be able to sleep either LOL!!! I'd be about as tongue tied about those bulls as I was in front of Guilherme Marchi! Make one of the Teagues people man your camera for a couple of pictures. People do that all the time on vacation "Hey, can you take our picture in front of this waterfall?"

It's a great picture, Jean! My daughter loved it, too.

I'd go with you if I were there Jaye! I think it would be great. The only thing I'd be nervous about is bugging him with too many questions and not wanting to leave.

I hope you see other big name bulls.

After looking at Teague's web site, I know Bones and Big Bucks will be there as they are participating in the live cover.  There is a list of Tom's other bulls on the site, but it is so confusing when there is more than one owner as to where the bulls are actually housed.  I'd like to see Scene of the Crash.  Hell, I'll be happy to see any of them.  Of course, LYJ will be my main focus but I want to get some good pictures of Bones since there aren't that many photos of him available yet.

Here's the latest correspondence I got from Steve Teague.  He sounds like a great person.  Looks like LYJ will soon be making NC his permanent home.  In the message I received from Steve prior to this one, he mentioned that bringing him to NC would be good for LYJ since the winters will be kinder on him as he ages.

Jaye, Tom bought half of Little Yellow Jacket in 2002 or 2003. He has recently purchased the other half and is bringing him home to North Carolina to live. Big Bucks will be there along with Bones. When Little Yellow Jacket gets to Graham, Tom will have his three World Champions on his farm in Graham. He also has I'm a Gangster, Red Bull, Chance, Deja Blu, along with Night Life and many more. Keep checking with me along and I'll let you know when they're available to be seen. He does have a beautiful place.Steve__________________Steve TeagueTurkey Crossing FarmsWinston-Salem, N.C.336-768-6896 ext. 203

Jaye, I already posted on Turn Him Out but I just have to repeat myself--what a great opportunity!  Take lots and lots of pictures and enjoy the day. Can't wait to hear all about it!

If you're near Greensboro NC, I'm only about 4 hours south of you (I live north of Atlanta). We're not getting any PBR this year (dangit) so my best friend and I are thinking about going to W-S for the event in late January. If you're going maybe we could see you there and talk some bull!

Now that sounds like a plan.  I have no one willing to go with me, and I really didn't want to go by myself.  It's all going to depend on my job.  I sell building materials, and as everyone knows, the building industry sucks out loud at the moment.  There's all sorts of rumors at work of shutting down, so we'll see.  I'd want to spend the night so as not to have to drive back late at night because I don't see so well in the dark but if I'm out of work, God forbid, I doubt I'll be able to make the trip.  Hopefully everything will go okay as I'd sure like to meet you.  And I've never been to a PBR event.  Only thing close was Mule Days in Benson, NC where they had what I guess would pass as bull riding.  Any type of festivity that chooses the prettiest and ugliest mules and elects a Miss Mule from the community, well do I need to say more?

Off topic here, but are you keeping up with the panda cub at Zoo Atlanta?  That little bugger is getting huge!  Again, if my career doesn't go down the tubes, I'm going to head down Atlanta way in early spring to see him.

I'm going to guess that the rider is out of view about one and a half inches above the top of the photograph.

Good heavens, that's appalling.  I think if I were a up-and-coming young bull rider and I saw that photograph, I'd think "You know, mom was right, selling encyclopedias DOES sound like a good idea."

Actually, I see a bit of leather fringe behind Bones's left front leg; this might be a part of the cowboy that broke off and remained behind when he was launched into orbit.  There's also a signature on the photograph, just below the remains of the cowboy, but I can't make out what it says.  I think it says "Rotsa Ruck!" but surely not...

Yeah, I did a bit of studying on that picture myself.  I saw that fringe near/under Bones' left front leg which I figure could be a part of the chap on the rider's former leg.  And I can see a cowboy hat peeking out from just above Bones' hump, but that could belong to another bullfighter.  At first I thought Bones' back hooves were cowboy boots but considering where the fringe is, well, let's just say I hope they're hooves.

I did find this photograph to be a fine example of why Bones is BUCKING bull of the year.

My God--could anyone stay on him when he's bucking like that? Damn.

I wonder which rider that is. Bones was out 3 times during the finals, right? Justin, Guilherme and who else got him? The chaps look red, so maybe that's Guilherme? Or, like you two said, what's left of him? ::shudder::

I can't wait to see what this bull does next year.

*Jaye, there's a Bones thread on the Team PBR message boards--do you mind if I share this picture there?

That sounds great. We'd definitely want to spend the night, too. I've been to the PBR events in Atlanta--twice at the Dome, and last year in Duluth (which was about five minutes from my house!). We also went to a Challenger event in Rome, GA where we gazed upon Guilherme--and for the first time in our lives, we could. NOT. speak.

Hey, we elected a cow as Miss Auburn when I was in college down there, so I'm down with a Miss Mule!

Yes! That Panda's a doll.I spy on him at work via the pandacam. Miss Mei Lan is so feisty, too. If you come down to Atlanta we'll have to check them out!

And Bones? Is one bad arse bull. It's going to be so exciting to follow his career and see who holds on first. Hurry January!

Walk This Way has died.

From the first part of the article:

By Susan Kanode

HIS FINAL CHAPTER

I lost a friend this week.

On Monday, Nov. 17, Walk This Way died after a short illness. Ive cried and cried, not with regret and for what could have been, simply because this bucking bull captured my heart and took a piece of it with him.

Click the above link for the whole story.

I'm so sorry to hear this. He was a beautiful bull and I wondered why we hadn't seen him lately.

I was surfing around hitting some other boards this week, and I was struck by the fact that several good bulls have died recently.  Walk this Way, Mayday and another one that I can't remember his name at the moment.  What really surprised me was the emotion I felt from the people who lost their bulls and the compassion it generated in other posters.

I'm sure, especially with Walk this Way, there was a big financial impact in losing such a great bull, but what I gathered from reading these threads is that what these people really felt was sadness for the loss of a good animal, almost like a pet.

I think this is one of the reasons I love bull riding.  These animals are treated extremely well not only because they generate an income for the owners, but also because many of these people truly care for them too.

Even though I didn't know much about Mayday, the post from the owner was heartbreaking.  He was genuinely upset.  He talked about how Mayday had been crippled early in his life from an accident and then came back and bucked.  Then he was crippled again from a shoulder injury but came back and bucked yet again.  He talked about how Mayday just loved to buck but had just drawn a bad hand in life.  He said he loved that bull.  I found myself tearing up just reading about it.

Donnie Gay will be co-hosting with Jeff Medders for the CBR in 2009!!!  This is exciting because the CBR airs a show not long after the actual event takes place unlike Xtreme Bulls.  Tuff Hedeman will be at the chutes with a headset on.  Donnie's first appearance will be in January and will air 1/14.  This will be a big boost to the CBR, and to be honest, with the bulls the CBR had out this year, they beat Xtreme Bulls by a long shot.

Wow, that is a big boost for the CBR!  Donnie Gay is one of the great personalities (maybe THE great personality) in bull riding and having him on TV will automatically boost ratings.  Honestly, the main reason I watched two or three year old PRCA events on ESPN Classic (other that desperation) was to listen to Donnie Gay.

Jeff Medders isn't bad either, now that I think about it.

Now if RFD could ever arrive at a fixed schedule!  I'm very periodic when it comes to TV viewing; I expect my shows to come on at the same time every week and if they don't, I become confused and petulant.

Right now RFD airs the CBR events on Wednesday evenings at 10:00 pm ET, I think. They re-air them on Saturdays at 11:00 am ET.
