The other day I bought a lightweight book off the "Humor" shelf called "Is It Just Me Or Is Everything ****?" It amounts to paragraph-length complaints about most everything in modern life, from Keith Richards to the NFL to "broadband access".
I generally love that sort of sardonic cynicism. I loved Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary and my favorite book of quotes is Whatever It Is, I'm Against It, a compilation of famous people saying nasty and catty things about practically everything (many of them, oddly enough, attributed to Ambrose Bierce).
Anyway, I read the book and nodded often. "Yes, that annoys me. Yes, that annoys me too." But when I was done with the book, I realized that even its authors annoyed me!
What a wonderful circularity! I feel that I have gotten full value from that book.
